Sun Protection Guidelines

The NSWSSA will encourage the wearing of sun protective clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses by its members, organisers and parents. In particular it will encourage:

ASPIRE Sabot sailors' code of values

  smokr free policy

All sailors and spectators to wear loose-fitting clothing that is made from tightly woven fabric to protect as much
skin as possible. A collar, worn up and longer sleeves provides better protection.

Sailors and supporters to wear a hat that complies with The Cancer Council New South Wales recommendations
eg. broad brimmed hat, legionnaire cap.

The use of an SPF30+ broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen. The sunscreen should be applied/smeared on
20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every 2 hours or when wiped or washed off.

Sailors and supporters to wear sunglasses that are labelled with and meet the Australian Standard 1067; offer
99%. protection from UV rays and are close fitting, wrap around style

When organising regattas the Association will consider minimising risk of sun exposure by:

Encouraging senior sailors, coaches, race officials, members in prominent positions and parents to be SunSmart
models by wearing sun protective clothing, broad-brimmed hats, sunglasses and visibly using SPF30+ sunscreen.

Where practical, scheduling activities outside the hours of 11am to 3pm (Daylight Saving) or 10am -2pm (Eastern
Standard Time) when the sun is at its most damaging.

Considering the availability of shade at the venue, and if considered necessary, consulting with the host club for
the provision of additional shade during the regattas.

When organising uniforms for Zone representative sailors, the Association will consider the use of The Cancer Council's SunSmart guidelines in designing or re-designing uniforms eg. loose-fitting, tightly woven fabrics, long sleeves, collared shirts, broad-brimmed or legionnaires hats.

The NSWSSA will communicate this policy and actively seek to promote, encourage and support sun protection at all times to members, parents and organisers by:

Communicating the importance of SunSmart policies in its newsletters, notice of races and communications to
  participating clubs.

Including SunSmart information in posters, newsletters, brochures and over the public address system at regattas.

Representative Teams

Representative Zone Team members have a responsibility to be good role models for safer sport practices-
including sun protection- and their role in encouraging others.

Hats for the Representative Teams will be broad-brimmed with The Cancer Council Logo.

Training & Development Program

Sun protection information will be made available at regatta registration.

Where possible shade will be provided at regatta venues.

Officials & administrators will role model appropriate sun protection.

This policy will be disseminated to Affiliated Zones and Clubs.

The Policy will be published on the Association's website and in the quarterly Newsletter.
